My brother fought his first war almost fifty years ago
And tho’ he made it back alive the cost he could not know
For the poisoned earth, the things he’d seen and thought he’d left
behind
Were enemies, hidden and asleep, in his body and his mind
There were no parades, no welcome homes, no thanks for a job well
done
Just protests and derision for a war he’d not begun
And after five and twenty years when it seemed the past had faded
Those enemies from deep inside awakened and invaded
Now my brother has fought his second war for the last five and twenty
years
To overcome the cancer, the memories, the fears
But he’s made it through with love and help and a courage all his own
And that is why, my brother’s one of the bravest men I’ve known
I love you, my brother, one of the bravest men I’ve known
I love you, my brother, one of the bravest men I’ve known
For my brother John on the occasion of his 71st birthday.
