I was sailin’ o’er the sound of Sleat
To a bonnie young lass who did wait
There on the shore to where I sailed
Near the highland town of Armadale
And soon we’d wed - get us a farm
My bonnie young lass there on my arm
But the wind blew strong and the waves broke high
As I made my way to the Isle of Skye

Then all at once a great gale came
That filled the sails across the main
The ship capsized - In the sound I’s tossed
And I feared that my life might be lost
For to survive I had to swim
As dark clouds made the day grow dim
And what of my lass if I should die
There on my way to the Isle of Skye

As the wind and rain raged all around
There in the mist I heard a sound
I knew at once from whence it came
‘Twas my bonnie young lass callin’ out my name
Her sweet young voice it was my guide
That brought me safely to her side
Great tears of joy I did cry
As I held her close on the Isle of Skye

Now we are wed – Happy as can be
With a wee little one sitting on my knee
We got our farm close to the shore
A man could never ask for more
But I often think of that fateful day
When my bonnie young lass showed me the way
She saved my life and that is why
I ‘m livin’ there on the Isle of Skye
I ‘m livin’ with her on the Isle of Skye
